DZALEKA HOMESTAY

The Dzaleka Homestay Program is a community-based tourism initiative in Dzaleka Refugee Camp, Malawi. This program helps in building the capacity of refugees, create business and job opportunities within the camp, and promote social cohesion between refugees, local and international guests.

The program transforms Dzaleka Refugee Camp into a tourist destination by showcasing its multiculturalism, rich diversity, and the resilient, inspiring stories of the people who live there.

The Homestay program  promotes itself  using various channels to inform families about the opportunity to host visitors. Interested families  apply to participate by submitting their applications online through the Tumaini Letu website. Once families are selected, guests who wish to stay with them book their homestay through the same platform.

The guests are charged a fee, and the money collected is allocated directly to the host families, compensating them for providing accommodation. Additionally, part of the fee goes to other service providers involved in the guest’s stay there.

Tumaini Letu trains young refugees in skills such as safety and security, entrepreneurship, tour guiding, and fine and performing arts, enabling them to generate income by offering various services to guests. This initiative contributes to the improvement of housing conditions and the overall livelihoods of refugees throughout the camp.

The homestay activities include organizing awareness campaigns through various media outlets to attract local and international tourists to Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
